Watermarking vs Provenance

Watermarking embeds a signal into generated media. Provenance records where media came from and how it changed. They can work together, but they are not the same thing.

For creators and publishers, the practical goal is trust: helping viewers understand whether a video was captured, generated, edited, or remixed.

What SynthID Does

Google uses SynthID as an imperceptible watermarking system across many generative media products. The promise is that generated content can carry signals that help identify AI output later.

Watermarks are useful, but no detection method should be treated as perfect under every edit, crop, upload, compression, or platform pipeline.

What C2PA and Content Credentials Do

C2PA Content Credentials are about signed provenance. They can record creation and editing history in a tamper-evident way when supported by the tools and platforms in the chain.

The challenge is preservation. Metadata can be stripped, unsupported platforms may not display credentials, and viewers may not know how to inspect them.

What Creators Should Do

• Use tools that preserve Content Credentials where possible.
• Keep original project files.
• Disclose AI generation or heavy AI editing clearly.
• Avoid claiming a detector is conclusive.
• Label public-interest synthetic media conservatively.

Trust compounds. Clear labeling is better than trying to look more human than the media really is.
